Common Terminologyshutterstock_211853998

When you are starting out with yoga, you may hear a few words that will have you sprinting to a dictionary. Yoga means “to unite.” Asana, or yoga posture/position, will be thrown about quite frequently in classes. Asanas can be simple seated positions or complex inversions. Om is a simple sound that is often chanted internally to create a feeling of peace. Namaste, which is commonly said at the end of yoga classes, means “greetings.” Bikram is a set of 26 positions that are repeated twice. Bikram yoga is practiced in a 100F degree studio, so if you don’t like it hot, you may want to stick with Hatha yoga, a more modern version that involves fluid, classic movements that speak to beginners.
